Down and Dirty

Hi everybody! This is The Daily Bone and I’m your lovable doggie host Chester L. W. Spaniel along with my perky colleague Joseph (Joey dog) Spaniel.

Today we’re continuing our series on fascinating little things you can find in your own backyard if you take the time to really look closely. Yup, today we’re leaving no stone unturned!

Wow! Look at these great little pill bugs. Did you know that these little guys are not actually bugs, but crustaceans? They can trace their ancestry back hundreds of millions of years!

A big nest of ants.
A respectable cricket.
A tiny spider.
Hey, what's that?
Rumble rumble rumble.

This is Chester L. W. Spaniel and Joseph (Joey dog) Spaniel, your faithful doggie reporters for The Daily Bone. Sorry, but we're going to have to conclude our documentary for now. There's another storm coming. Bye!

WE love Pill Bugs... They are so Cool. They are like TRILOBITES which are OHIO's State FOSSIL.... WE HAVE one ... THANKS to our WONDERFUL FUREND... Sw. Wm. the Scot... who asked his mom to send it to us... Miss Lee found it in South Western Ohio...
We hope your storm is NOT bad.

    1. We know about trilobites! Dad has been collecting fossils all his life. (In some ways he IS a fossil, but we won't get into that.) There are a lot of places in this area to find fossils since it's almost all sedimentary rock. Our NY state fossil is the eurypterid.

    1. Don't worry, we carefully put the rock back on top of the ant nest. Those white things are actually ant pupae. Look closely and see you'll see the little eye spots on some of them.

    1. All those little crawlies are very important to the ecosystem. As long as they don't get in the house or turn up where you don't expect them, like in your fur!
