Beautiful Blooms and Bugs Too

Greetings friends and fans. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

We have some more flowers blooming in our yard right now.

The entire yard smells like flowers now!

This just in: after the sun set, we could hear the tell-tale buzzing of June bugs rising up from the lawn. Wow! I love chasing June bugs around! They're big and bumbly like stink bugs, but without the stink. Here are a couple that ghostwriter caught for me:

Um, hello. We're June bugs.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Flowers and More

Hello everyone. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

You may remember a couple days ago,  we were outraged at the local Great Grackle Flying PTA (Poop Tosser's Association) calling me and my ghostwriter rude names. Well yesterday it was the Stodgy Robin Society's turn. We went out into the back yard, and Lady Hildegarde Hoppington was up in the silver maple tree yelling at us. Fortunately robins are much more polite than grackles. She only glared at us and said, "boop boop boop boop." The reason for her consternation was this little birdie:

Introducing Miss Dorothy Hoppington-Pinfeathers.

Hello Miss Dorothy Hoppington-Pinfeathers. I'm Chester L. W. Spaniel, and I'm pleased to make your acquaintance. I would be honored to interview you for my Flower Friday Edition of The Daily Bone. Don't worry, I won't try to catch you.

Apparently her mother didn't think Miss Dorothy was old enough for a public appearance and interview yet, so she instructed her daughter to fly away. Oh well. I said good-bye and hoped she would find lots of big slimy worms for dinner today.
Later that evening I heard the Stodgy Robin Society chorus singing:

Cheery-up cheery-up,
Our beautiful babies are all growing up,
Cheery-up cheery-cheer,
In Chester's yard there's no need to fear …

Isn't that nice of them?

We also met this little guy:

Ghostwriter found him while pulling up weeds under the birdie feeder. He didn't have anything to say, but peed all over ghostwriter's hands. She brought him to the kitchen sink so she could rinse off her hands before releasing him in the front yard where I would be less likely to find him. I was pretty tired after all that. The rest of that day was dreary, cloudy, and raining.

Now today we saw an incredible sight: sunshine!

Please excuse me for squinting. But after all the rain we've had lately, I'm not used to the glare.

As promised, I'll show you some flowers.

Sweet woodruff blooming in the front yard. Yes, it smells really sweet.

Lily-of-the-valley flowers that haven't quite opened yet.

Tulips

My ghostwriter got a lot of flowers on Mother's Day. Wow!

Joey's pear tree still has plenty of blossoms.

Hopefully there will be enough bees to pollinate them so we can have some yummy pears.

News From Blogville

I have a very sad announcement to make now. A good kitty cat friend of ours, named Crocket,  had an unfortunate accident earlier this week. His family is devastated! So as a tribute to him, tomorrow is going to be a special remembrance day.

We'll now have a  moment of silence.

Grackle Jerks

Greetings loyal and faithful readers. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your indignant doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

The reason for my acrimony today is because practically the entire Great Grackle Flying PTA (Poop Tossers Association) was out calling me and my ghostwriter jerks!

I kid you not! The whole time we were out in the yard, looking for nice things to post on The Daily Bone today, they hopped around on branches above our heads yelling "jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk!"

Jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk!

Crummy rotten noisy stinky annoying rude grackles! Oh, maybe I'd better take out Ye Olde Shakespeare Insult Kit for this occasion. You grackles are but churlish tardy-gaited flap dragons, surly beetle-headed maggot pies, and roguish hedge-born miscreants! Grrrrrrr!

But my ghostwriter said they were doing that because their little baby gargoyles, oops I mean grackles, are starting to leave their nests. Of course she had a scientific term for it: mobbing behavior. In fact, she thought it was pretty funny when she looked out the window the other day, and the grackles were dive bombing Black Friday the squirrel and calling him a jerk too! They chased him all the way across the green belt! She's sorry she couldn't get a picture of that.

Well, I figured, that means perhaps there's one of those ugly grackle babies on the ground in my yard. I decided to go look for it.

Nothing by the shed.

Not in the compost pile.

All clear in the flower bed.

Ghostwriter spotted one in the top of the silver maple. It was an ugly little beastie, and it was shouting as loudly as possible: jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk! (They don't exactly have a large vocabulary, do they?)

Here's a picture of one from a few years ago:

Little Squatty Dingledoody.

If that's not an homely baby I don't know what is! On the bright side, though, this means the grackles will soon be moving on to where ever they go after nesting time is over. And then peace and quiet will resume in the neighborhood, except for, of course, the incessant drone of lawn mowers.

Good day all.

Flower Friday

Good day everyone. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your diligent doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

Spring is proceeding nicely here in WNY, and we have a lot to show you today. First up, a couple days ago there was a surprise at the nursing home where my ghostwriter works. Tucked in the corner next to the front door was a tiny little newborn fawn. It stayed there all afternoon, while visitors were coming and going, school buses were driving by, and kids were walking on the sidewalk. The nursing home staff were very worried that the mother deer wouldn't come and get her baby. But sure enough, she did. We hope this baby is doing well now.

On the home front, the grackles and other birdies are busy raising their youngsters too. We found this egg shell on the ground in the front yard.

The Great Grackle Flying PTA (Poop Tossers Association) is still angry at us for not filling the birdie feeders, and have begun their messy campaign of bombardment of our cars. They obviously have enough to eat!

In other news, angel Joey dog's pear tree is starting to bloom.

I sure hope the weather stays warm enough for the bees to pollinate them so we get lots of yummy pears this summer. Here are a few more flowers from our yard.

Forget-me-nots

Grape hyacinths

Tulip

Yesterday afternoon, this big truck stopped in front of our driveway and a guy got out to talk to Dad and ghostwriter. Apparently my humans are thinking about cutting down the gigantic silver maple in my back yard. As much as we love that tree, it's gotten way too big and could possible fall on the house if there was a big ice storm.

Just think what the Evil Squirrel Cartel will do if they raid the birdie feeders and then don't have that tree to scurry up when I go out to chase them! Hehehe!

I hope you all have a Happy Mother's Day this Sunday!

Monday Evening News

Greetings loyal readers. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your faithful doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

My ghostwriter worked over the weekend, but that didn't stop lots of events from happening. Yesterday was the Kentucky Derby. That's a big race with a bunch of horses running around in a circle to see who finishes first. The race itself only takes a couple minutes. But the news about it goes on for hours! The ladies at the nursing home put on their fancy hats and watched most of it.
Here's Oma with her flower hat on:

After that, they got an unexpected surprise as they looked out the patio windows. A big, bright, beautiful rainbow appeared as the setting sun shot rays through some rain clouds in the eastern sky!

But that's not all that happened this weekend! We received pictures from my favorite young human, Ryan, who got to visit some big gigantic machines, like fire engines, garbage trucks, and bulldozers. Ryan loves big trucks and he got a real close-up look at them all!

Wow! I wonder if Ironing Board Man was there too?

As you can see, we actually have some nice sunny warm weather!

Hey, is that the mail truck going by? Excuse me for a moment while I go bark at it. Please take a look at some more of our beautiful flowers.

Yellow tulip with one red stripe

Cheerful dandelions

Pear blossoms ready to open

Fancy daffodils

OK, I'm back. As I was saying, flowers and trees are blooming everywhere!

Can't you just taste the pollen in the air?

Oh, do you know what else happens on May 4th? It's the day you can watch all the Star Wars movies on TV. Dad was very happy that day. For one thing, he loves puns (May the 4th be with you.) I'll explain what else he liked that day. You see, he is severely hard of hearing. When those movies first came out, he could never understand what all those droids and Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers and other characters were saying. He can lip read very well, but not if the characters all have face masks on! Saturday was the first time he ever saw the first Star Wars movie with closed captions! They even captioned R2D2's chirps and squeaks!

The yellow words are the captions

Dad watching Star Wars

MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU

Just when I thought I was finished with the news, this happened:

First grilled steak of the season! Super yummy!

One more thing. Ghostwriter took a random picture of the swirling clouds this afternoon. She didn't see anything in them at first.

But if you make the picture small, you can see a doggie face with long ears flying. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Maybe it was angel Joey dog checking in on us.

And now you know the news!
