Solstice

Greetings fellow Earthlings. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

Today is Winter Solstice. That means it's the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, and the official start of winter. Here in WNY, the sun officially rose at 7:39AM and set at 4:39PM. At the bottom of this post, you will find a link to site that gives you a scientific explanation of what solstice is, along with some cool charts and pictures. Here's our best shot of the day, the sun at noon:

Mr. Seedcruncher, CEO of Sparrows Incorporated finally made an appearance today. He was kind of in a hurry, though. There was a kitty cat stalking the Sparrows Inc. Country Club in the Sticks.

Fortunately the kitty cat stayed on the other side of the fence. But all the sparrows came out of the sticks and lined up on the fence and the wooden glider. It was like a birdie fire drill!

To make matters worse, there were lots of operatives from the Evil Squirrel Cartel literally hanging around today. Sorry the picture isn't better, but, yes, that is alias Twinkletoes hanging upside-down from the tree talking to Fatty White-ears. I'll have to tell Dad not to put as many peanuts in the birdie feeder tomorrow. I've been running and barking all day!

Fortunately, the sun went down early!

Snnnnoorrrrrrrrk!

Happy Solstice everyone.

  2. Happy Solstice Day to you, Chester. We guess this year winter is actually doing its thing on time. We have a big cold blast coming in tomorrow and for the next several days. There may even be a dusting of snow.

  3. You have a lot of work during the day managing your back yard. I think you are doing a good job. If you need help keeping the cats and squirrels away let us know

  4. That's really cool info. I slept most of the day while mom teleworked. But temps in the 409's was nice this week for some roll in the yard time.

  5. Happy winter! We are expecting a cold front this weekend after a day of storms tomorrow. It'd be great to have a cold Christmas for a change. We usually wear short sleeves! Ho Ho Ho!

  7. Somebody told me yesterday the sun turned towards us. Great, but so far I have not seen much proof of it yet: the sun rises an hour later than at yours and it sets an hour earlier! And if it's drab weather like today: even worse. But spring is on its way (thinking positive thoughts here).

  11. By now we can see the bit of extra light in the evening...hooray!
There are plenty of birds at our hanging peanut feeders. But the squirrels cannot climb up the stovepipe around the pole to reach them, BOL!
