Late October

Greetings! This is The Daily Bone and I'm your doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

The month of October is drawing to a close. The weather here in WNY has been changeable. Yesterday it was gloomy, and dreary, and depressing, and pouring rain non-stop all day.

In the evening, just when it was getting dark, hundreds of geese flew by! They were going real fast, and it was cloudy so my ghostwriter had a hard time getting a good picture of them.

The local Sparrows Incorporated flock has at least three dozen birdie members now. They can finish off two birdie feeders full of seeds in less that two days! They're pretty bold too. They don't bother to fly away when I'm outside sniffing around. Do you see them sitting on the fence in this picture, below?

There have been three crummy, rotten, evil squirrels hanging around lately! They don't even run away when ghostwriter taps on the window. In fact, they'll look at her as if they expect her to give them a peanut butter sandwich! They take off pretty fast when I come outside, though.

Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Today, the rain stopped, and the sun came out!

Hooray for blue skies!

We were surprised to see this little critter trying to get into the feeders:

At first we thought this was a chipmunk. But a closer look confirmed that this was a baby squirrel. We think it's kind of late in the season for youngsters like this. We wonder how he's going to make it through the winter, especially with competition from the bigger, fatter, meaner squirrels. Well, there are plenty of berries on our hawthorn tree that he could eat in a pinch. Oh, and lots of acorns in the neighbor's big oak tree.

I guess I'll give him a pass!

  1. That sure was a crazy wet day we had yesterday, wasn't it? We've got lots of squirrels burying lots of nuts all over our yard too.

  2. That looks like a red squirrel, not a baby grey one..at least I think so, it really looks like those that we have here, they are really cheeky and bold...and they are nastier than the bigger ones. Have no worries about how it will make it through a winter..

Pretty fall colors, everything looks so bright and shiny when the sun arrives! We had all those rain filled buckets here on Sunday and Monday. We had about 4 inches of rain in the gauge.

A pretty rose! A late bloomer, LOL!

    1. We wondered if that might be a different type of Squirrel entirely. We've never seen one like this before.

  3. You think you got trouble you know what we had at our bird feeder today, about nine big turkeys. They wouldn't leave no matter how much I barked.

  4. We had that same depressing rain and then the winds came. Mom has lots of sticks to pick up today. Your Hawthorne berries are so pretty and the baby squirrel is just too cute - even if they are a pain~

  5. Hi Chester - we've missed seeing you this last year while Mom was so sick and then Grandpa went to the people Bridge. So happy you are well and showing us beautiful things. Abby Lab (and sister Lorelei Lab)

  6. Gosh, you started with a rather "sad and dreary" picture Chester ... but we're glad you closed with a "smiling happy" picture! Rainy skies will often give way to pretty blue skies, right? If you wait long enough ... Have a fun weekend, friend!

  10. Wow! The evil squirrels have not cleaned out your oak trees? Between our squirrels (and the deer) the trees are naked of acorns. We have had a ton of deer move in to the village as it is hunting season on the other side of the border. They LOVE the bird feeders too! We too have had several flocks of geese and ducks come through, but we are in the mountains, so we don't get the huge ones they do back on the praries. We LOVE Fall with all the colors and all the animals! Thanks for showing us fall at your place Chester! And thanks so much for stopping by to see us! We hope that you and your peeps have a marvellously happy week!

  11. That blue sky looks so good with the autumn leaves.
And that baby squirrel looks really cute. Good on you for not chasing it.

As regards traveling: it is of course a bit easier when living in Europe. There are two countries on our doorstep and within five hours of traveling, we can be in Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg or France! Each country is different from the other. Plus, we get about 5 weeks paid holiday in the Netherlands!

  12. Hi friend, Ojo here! You saw our geese! The Canada Geese left from here, in Canada, a while ago. Now they are flying over you! See you in the spring, geese!
