Birdie Drama

Greetings friends and fans. This is The Daily Bone, and I'm your doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

This is the season for lots of birdie drama, as nests are built, eggs are laid, and hatched, and babies grow up. We were very lucky to have found two robin nests in our front yard. We've been watching as the robin families grow.

Nest #1 on May 14

Nest #2 on May 14

Nest #1 on May 15

Nest #1 on May 17

Nest # 1 on May 20

On the night of May 20, there was a big storm with high winds and heavy rain. Nest #1 got knocked over, and the babies are gone. Well, sometimes Mother Nature is not so kind.

But fortunately nest #2 is in a more sheltered spot. This morning the eggs started hatching.

We'll keep you posted on the progress of this robin family, and hope they have better luck.

But we have another birdie drama event. A couple days ago, we heard a loud thump on the dining room window. When we looked out, a dazed goldfinch was sitting on the window box feeder. We opened the window to see if it was all right, but the birdie didn't move. Ghostwriter was able to pick it up in her hand.

She held it until it seemed to become more alert, and then put it into the feeder box.

After a few more minutes, it flew away.

Good luck birdie!

  1. Nature can be so unkind. We hope the birdies in the other nest all make it! Mom loves the sweet song that the goldfinch makes. They are such beautiful birds!

  3. How sad that nest #1 didn't survive the storm but we're glad to see nest #2 is doing well. We hope the robins from nest #1 will rebuild and try again. It's good to see that the goldfinch was able to recover from flying into the window.

  8. We are sad about the loss of your birds. We have seen first hand this week how cruel nature can be. Lee and Phod who are at hour 92.5 without power, but saw hydro guys on ATVs in the yard so hopefully soon!

  9. Those storms can be wicked and unmerciful in what they destroy:(

Glad some of your wee birdies were not harmed and that your GW could save the goldfinch!
Maybe Ma and Pa Robin will make a new nest in a better spot.

  13. Chester, you and your Mom are truly Nature's best friends, caring so much for your feathered friends. Mom's photos are outstanding, thanks also for protecting the little finch until he was ready to be on his own again.
