Flower Deficient Friday

This is The Daily Bone and I'm your frustrated doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

So here it is, the middle of April and we still have no flowers, except for that little patch of daffodils,

and one lonesome crocus.

Ghostwriter and I searched the entire yard and found nothing but mud, sticks, leaves, and debris.

At least the grass is starting to green up in spots.

The weather report says we're getting sleet and freezing rain on Saturday. Blah!

But if we took a closer look, we found growing things that are potential flowers.

Sweet woodruff.

Hyacinths.

Irises.

Stonecrop.

Forget-me-nots.

Yarrow.

A birdie egg that was under a bush.

No! I didn't eat the birdie egg!* Ghostwriter said it was probably stolen by a crow.

She also said she saw our friendly neighborhood Cooper's hawk sitting up in the silver maple tree the other day. He's probably the one who has been eating the mourning doves and leaving behind piles of feathers in my yard. I wish he'd catch a few squirrels too. (If memory serves, Mr. Seedcruncher, CEO of Sparrows Inc. said the hawk's name is C. B. Cooper. He came to visit the Sparrows Inc. Country Club in the Sticks one day last December. I wondered if he ate any of the sparrows while he was there. But Mr. Seedcruncher said he was there for a business meeting regarding the mousies who were always sneaking into their facility.  I think the C. B. must be short for Cool Beans.)

Ghostwriter said she was disappointed that she couldn't get a good picture of him.

Hey Mr. Cool Beans Cooper, please feel free to pick off some of those noisy grackles too! I saw them building nests in just about every arbor vitae in the area. Pretty soon there'll be big slimy poops everywhere!

I wonder if he heard me …

* When I was a young pup, a robin made a nest in the lowest branches of the pear tree in the back yard. Neither Joey dog, Miss Ginger, nor I paid any attention to it at first. But the day the robin laid four perfect blue eggs, my nose caught the scent. Before ghostwriter could stop me, I stood up on my back legs, stuck my nose in the nest, and ate all the eggs real fast! Yum! After we doggies went back in the house, the mommy robin returned to her nest to find her eggs all gone. She stared and stared at it as if she was thinking, "I'm certain I put four eggs in there! Now where did they go?" Ghostwriter removed the nest so the robin wouldn't repeat the same mistake.

Sorry. But they were delicious!

Here's a link to the post from the day Mr. C. B. Cooper visited the Sparrows.

  1. We only have our hyacinths in our yard for flowers. We had some thunderstorms tonight with some moderate hail. And tomorrow will be in the 40s followed by a mix of sleet and ice and snow and rain into Sunday morning with temps in the 30s!!! Crazy!!!

Chester, we probably would have eaten the eggs too:(

  2. At least you *have* daffs...we only have some blue bells...and we had about three crocuses. And we are supposed to get that freezing rain and thunderstorms over the next few days also. Blech.

Dalton hasn't find any eggs yet, but he does seem to have a knack for finding snakes (and trying to kill them by shaking them hard and throwing them in the air...what a silly terrierist pup...),that are trying to warm up in sunpatches and moles...the yard looks like a digging crew has visited. Sheesh.

  6. Robins eggs are so pretty. I would be tempted to eat them too, Chester. You have so much green promise of spring but sleet and freezing rain - yuk!

We found a tiny little flower by the window yesterday.
Your yard looks much better than ours.

  8. You at least have some daffy dills blooming. Our grass is trying to grow too. We are crossing our paws that we don't get too much ice today and that our power stays on.

Was that tasty? One thing we have discovered lately is I, Madi(son) D Cat love the yoke of a hard boiled egg. I can smell the eggs when mom starts peeling them for potato salad.
