Mantis Monday

Hello! This is The Daily Bone and I'm your diligent doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

It's the middle of August and there are lots of amazing bugs everywhere. Last night my ghostwriter had to work until 9pm. It was starting to rain then, so she ran to her car, and jumped in as quickly as she could. Somehow, a beautiful preying mantis had slipped into the car as well. She couldn't do much about it while she was driving through a torrent of of rain in the dark, with lightning flashing all around. When she finally got home, she made a fast dash into the garage, and forgot about the mantis.

This morning it was still alive and waiting for someone to release it. But ghostwriter wanted to take a few pictures first. She gently brought it into the house, and set it on the counter with a big glass over it. Wow! Look at those massive, sharp claws! These insects will catch other insects, and eat them while they are still alive.

A few minutes later, she brought it outside and placed it atop some red roses.

After a couple more poses, it flew away.

This little hover fly was very glad the mighty mantis didn't see it sitting on the rose stem right below it!

Bye bye!

  1. I think that might have been an awesome angel visit.

  2. Mantises are kind of creepy, but they are still so beautiful!

Sometimes we see them here, too. Once there was a huge one at petcretary's work...hey, what about that, we both see them at our work, BOL!

There was a not too large one on our window screen once...but the only thing that gets in our car is mosquitoes and wasps, flies...and bees. Yikes!
Once we had a tree-frog hang on for a 25 mile hike to the next town. Amazing, as we were traveling 60-70MPH...

  3. What great shots of the preying mantis! I'm not sure that my mom could have ridden all the way home with one loose in her car. Ghostwriter is very brave!

  4. CHESTER my word above...what a beautiful Mantis...absolutely 100% perfect too. GW gave it a dry place overnight then it gave her all these glorious photos. Simply a stunning post...the red roses WOW
of course even a Praying mantis does not trump the last gorgeous photo of YOU handsome Chester

  5. That mantis certainly liked the limelight. He is a supermodel.

    Love and licks,

  6. How cool that you got to see that mantis up close. Our mom probably would have been screaming and wrecked the car if that huge thing was in it with her. BOL!

  7. What an cool find!! We love the way your Mama isn't squeamish about buggies!

    1. We are all science geeks at my house, and love all of the creepy crawly creatures.

  8. Wow, what big claws he has! Maybe that's a bug I shouldn't try to snap at. ....Maybe.

PeeS: Our Best Guy isn't a sibling, he's Momma's boyfriend. BOL.

  9. The Ghostwriter is so kind to take care of the praying mantis. We have never seen one with such detail. We hope he found something to eat, but not that hover fly:)

Woos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  10. That is a big mantis! I don't think we get them as big here. Or if we do, I never see them!

  11. Chester please thank GW for her most kind words about my poetry.
Pam founds quite intriguing photos for us. I struggle with 'fantasy' photos the most. Like the lady on the horse a few weeks ago. Next weeks will be interesting...

  12. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! Those are cool bugs. I like to bite at bugs. Do you like to bite at bugs?

  13. Whoa~~~, that's huge!! My mom is always afraid of bugs. hehehe...You made her jump!

    Pinot xo

  14. You were brave to drive with it in your car. I'd have been scared it would hop on me. LOL! They are really cool looking insects.
