On High Alert

Hello everybody, and Happy Mother's Day! This is The Daily Bone and I'm your reliable and ever vigilant  doggie correspondent Chester L. W. Spaniel.

As you recall, yesterday there was a horrible crime scene in our back yard. A harmless, law-abiding robin was caught, plucked, and eaten by a hawk. We're fairly sure it was a hawk, because this isn't the first time we've seen this kind of carnage. Although we don't have any photos, we've seen Cooper's hawks, and red tailed hawks swoop down on birds. Usually they go after the mourning doves. I wish they would pick up some of those annoying grackles and squirrels!

Look, it's Swanky Poobomber right out in the open!

Take a peek at this scraggly tailed miscreant!

So anyway, I'm keeping close watch on the back yard today.

Anything that waddles, flies, buzzes, flutters, dive bombs, or scampers across the yard will be seen by my sharp eyes!

I can still see the tree tops from here!

Yawn! It's a boring job. But somebody has to do it.

We got a break on the case of the exploded birdie this evening. Our Joanna human, who was a volunteer for Wild Wings at Mendon Ponds  (wildwings)  says it was definitely the work of a hawk. We went outside at 6:30 this evening and happened to see a small predatory birdie glide over the scene of the crime. After a bit of research, we were able to identify it as a merlin.  www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Merlin/id  Case closed!

Oh, and ghostwriter got some flowers and some delicious treats for Mother's Day. Now that I've solved the case of the exploded birdie, I can focus my attention on other things, like cherry cordials, chocolate* covered caramels, and …

… salted caramel gelato. Yum.

*Remember, chocolate is a deadly poison for doggies. Please be sure to keep your Mother's Day chocolates away from your tail wagging furkids.

  5. Bummer that the hawks have to pick on the mourning doves. They're so pretty! We agree that they should go after those evil squirrels instead, Chester!

  10. We know some of the bigger hawks can catch cats and small doggies. Be careful out there everyone! Ghostwriter remembers the 60's and 70's when it was a miracle to see a hawk, or even a vulture, anywhere. Now we see them all the time!
