A Very Cool Day

Good evening friends and fans! This is The Daily Bone and I'm your vigilant doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

It's another gray day! The sun didn't come out from behind the clouds at all!

I've been at my look-out post watching for the Evil Squirrel Cartel.

Today I saw three of them, all in my yard at the same time. One even had a piece of pizza! I swear on the ashes of my Patron Saint Old Charisma, that squirrel actually had a piece of pizza in it's greedy little paws, and was sitting in the linden tree eating it! I couldn't get a good picture, but you can be assured, I chased him away. I would have taken the pizza, but the miscreant dropped it on the other side of the fence. Hopefully some of the birdies will find it.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered this comic today!

Mutts

Ghostwriter says she thinks one of our neighbors is feeding the squirrels. This wasn't the first time she's seen a squirrel with a big hunk of bread or something that isn't normally found growing on the local trees. When I find out exactly who is feeding those no-good moochers, I'll be sure to give them a good barking at!

In other news, Dad finally got some suet cakes for our window box birdie feeder.
Look who showed up!

Hello Mr. Red Belly Woodpecker! I hope you like suet!

You are welcome at our birdie cafeteria any time!

Please come back soon!

The little sparrows and juncos were enjoying the seeds from the hanging birdie feeder.

You may have noticed I didn't do a Yum Yum Saturday post yesterday.

That's because I knew there would be some extra special delicious yum yum food today. Ghostwriter made cabbage rolls! She still uses the recipe she got from her Auntie Ann that's been in the family for ages. It's a lot of work, but really worth it.

Mix about 3 pounds of ground beef with cooked rice and form into about 24 balls. Cut the bacon slices in half and set aside. Take a whole head of cabbage and carve out the center. Then dip it in a big pot of boiling water to loosen the outer leaves. Peel them off the head and then put the head back into the boiling water. Repeat until all the leaves are separated. Don't boil them for too long. You want them to be flexible but not soggy. Next wrap the cabbage leaves around the meat. Wrap a piece of bacon around each stuffed leaf. Place into a crock pot and cover with 2 large cans of undiluted tomato soup. Cook on high for about six hours.

Serve with plenty of fresh bread and butter. But don't give any of that bread to the squirrels!

Oh, and my favorite miniature human, Ryan came to visit with his Mom and Dad. Ryan runs around so much, it's hard to get a good picture! (He figured out where the yum yum doggie treat jar is and likes to give me treats. )

To round things off, I have a few funny comics to show you.

And now it's getting late, and I'm trying to get some well earned sleep. Ghostwriter and Dad were watching a show called America's Funniest Videos on TV. There was a clip about squirrels.

Wha … did they say …

… squirrels?

Pfffft!

Sssssnnnoooorrrrrrkkk!

  4. Are you serious? There was a squirrel eating pizza?? That is just crazy! Oh, look at your cabbage rolls. GMa makes those sometimes but hers do not have bacon! You are lucky to get bacon with yours!

  5. That's funny about the squirrel. We've had crows show up in our yard with big hunks of bread. In the warmer weather they use our bird baths to dunk it to make it softer for them to eat. We think the little old lady that lives up the road puts the bread out.

  7. We loved your funnies. And we might have to give that recipe a try. It sounds delicious. Only thing is: no canned tomato soup in this country! Should we move?

  10. Squirrels with pizza? Why are they eating better than we are? This needs to be investigated. I am glad you are still getting birds. A lot of ours have left for warmer places. Have a great day
