Good Day

Greetings friends and fans. This is The Daily Bone, and I'm your trustworthy doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

We had some warmer weather today! The sun was actually out, and it was over 50ºF!

So we went out in the back yard to see what's new. As you know, our observational method is very simple: look up, look down. You're bound to see some amazing things!

There were several different kinds of birdies in the trees, including robins who were eating the hawthorn berries, cardinals, house finches, juncos, and sparrows. Suddenly we heard: chuck-chuck-chuck-skarrreeeeeeeeeeeech!

It was like fingernails on a chalk board. My ghostwriter and I both cringed at the awful sound.
Up in the  oak tree was a big, screeching grackle!

He was soon joined by several of his friends.

Long time readers will remember our yearly rants about those annoying birdies. Not only do they make the most discordant noises, but they poop all over everything, and bully the other birdies. They also tend to be vainglorious and have very pompous names like Effluvium Scatterstool, and Ditzy Sournote. I didn't get all the names of this group. They didn't hang around long with me barking at them. I'm sure they'll be sorry they came back from their southern vacations so early in the season. There's bound to be at least one more big snow storm here in WNY. Winter never just sneaks away quietly! As you can see in the pictures above, it's already clouding over.

Anyhow, getting back to our original mission, we looked down and found a few signs of spring.

Daffodils just starting to grow.

Hostas maybe?

There's only a little bit of snow left. It's mostly on the north side of the house.

The ground is still frozen there, and we found the most interesting patterns in the ice.

Everywhere else, it was getting quite muddy. I've had to get my feet washed in the bathtub after my expeditions in the yard for the last three days!

Oh, this just in: the weatherman said that our warm spell will soon be over. It will be snowy and cold for the rest of the week and through the weekend! Hahaha! I told you those grackles will regret coming back to town so early!

Harumph! Time for a nap. See you later!

  1. Time to call up the Grackle Patrol:)

Not many signs yet here of spring other than a few mud puddles after a couple of rainy days:(

  3. Phooey on Grackles. They steal all the suet we put out for woodpeckers and other more polite birds.

We had some nice sunny and warmish days here too...but...yup the S-word will be big in the days ahead, too...sigh...

We don't have much happening in the spring department yet...just a few brave daffodil tips.

  5. Oh no, not those grackles already?
We already have the daffodils blooming everywhere. It has been way too warm and we have not had a single snow flake. Although they say we might have some 'wintery showers' tomorrow. Which will mean some sleety rain probably.

  7. Hi Chester. Despite the warm weather our yard is still mostly covered in snow! The good thing is it keeps us from getting muddy feet. There certainly aren't any daffodils poking up in our yard yet.

  8. Smart boy - sleeping through the grackles! You don't need their negativity in your life. Sweet dreams!

  9. Stoopid grackles! I hope they freeze their tailfeathers off when winter comes back to your house! But I also hope the daffies thrive!

  10. Besides those noisy snobby grackles, you found some lovely signs of Spring!! The Red Breasted Robins are all over the place here and we are hoping Spring decides to stay.

  11. Oh, those friggin' grackles! Good thingie you scared them off...sounds like they will wish they stayed south a bit longer! BOL! I thinks Winter decided to skip this year here ~ it's been dry for a month, and it's gonna gets to 80 degrees in a couple of days! Not quite ready for that! butts, the 70's have been enjoyable. I likes that you had some pawsome muddy days, I hopes you gets some snow zoomies this weekend! Do some for me, k?
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

  12. Please do not send the grackles back to us! We are glad to be rid of them, even if only briefly ... and like you, the poor daffydils are very confused, popping up here and there long before they should! No snow for us, but lots of mud to run in ... I like the mud, the humans not so much ...
