Mr. Chip And Company

Good morning. This is The Daily BOne and I'm your observant doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

It's yet another gray and rainy day. I've been keeping busy with bird-watching. This window feeder has one-way mirrors on it so we can see the birds, but they can't see us. It's taken a lot of wear and tear over the years. A few summers ago, there was a cowbird who declared war on his reflection. We called him Dummy Bird. He'd lunge and peck at his reflection all day long until his tail feathers wore down to stubs and the mirror got all scratched up. We had to take the entire feeder away for a week before he finally left the area! Unfortunately, we don't have any photos of him.

The next year, Crazy Bird the red cardinal started attacking his reflection in the windows on the house. Occasionally he'd go after his reflection inside the feeder, and the rear view mirrors of the cars too. He gave up and moved on after a couple weeks.

This year, I'd like to present to you Mr. Chip! He is a male chipping sparrow. This morning we noticed him hopping around on top of the feeder and tapping at the window.

He declined to be interviewed.

We also saw the house finch family. Here's Mom:

And here's one of their three noisy and boisterous kids:

Ma and Pa goldfinch made an appearance too, but didn't come to the window feeder.

There's no sign of this rain stopping.

It's going to be a long day.

  4. At least you have those birds to keep you entertained. We are having days of endless rain too - we need the rain to go away and the sun to return. The grass has been watered enough. Our tomatoes need sunshine:)

Hope the rain stops there too so you can get out on treerat patrol.

  5. We have some black birds that are driving us crazy - they have a nest in our tree and they dive bomb Dad when he goes out there - And they sing as soon as the sun comes up and Mom has to get up and close the window so we can sleep a little longer

  8. Thanks for sharing the birdies. We don't have a feeder near a window as our front of the house and back is a big porch but we love to watch them flit around the feeders hanging in the Spruces
